Engine Care: Signs Your Car Needs Attention

enginerepairswarning signs

Your engine is the heart of your car. And like a human heart, it gives clear warning signs before failing. Ignoring them can lead to catastrophic (and expensive) damage. Learn to recognise these 9 symptoms.

⚠️ 1. Check Engine Light (CEL)

Most common, most ignored. A steady light means a problem that needs attention (but not immediate death). A flashing CEL means active misfire, catalytic converter damage is imminent. Pull over safely and call for a tow.

⚠️ 2. Unusual Noises

  • Knocking or pinging: Could be low octane fuel, carbon buildup, or worn bearings. Stop driving.
  • Ticking that speeds up with RPM: Low oil level or bad lifter. Check oil immediately.
  • Grinding or screeching from the front: Often a failing water pump or alternator bearing, not the engine itself, but urgent.

⚠️ 3. Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

  • Blue smoke: Burning oil, worn piston rings or valve seals. Expect high repair cost.
  • White smoke (thick, doesn’t dissipate quickly): Coolant entering combustion chamber, blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. Do not drive.
  • Black smoke: Too much fuel, faulty injector, bad oxygen sensor, or clogged air filter. Can be fixed easily.

⚠️ 4. Loss of Power or Hesitation

Feels like the car is "holding back" when you press the accelerator. Causes: clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, or mass airflow sensor failure.

⚠️ 5. Rough Idle or Stalling

The engine shakes at traffic lights and may stall. Often a vacuum leak, dirty throttle body, or failing idle air control valve.

⚠️ 6. Overheating

Temperature gauge in the red or steam from bonnet. Pull over immediately. Common causes: low coolant, stuck thermostat, broken water pump, or blown head gasket. Driving even a minute overheated can warp the cylinder head, a ₦500,000+ repair.

⚠️ 7. Oil Leaks

Puddles under the car or burning oil smell. While small leaks can be monitored, a sudden large leak can starve the engine of oil. Check level weekly.

⚠️ 8. Coolant Loss Without Visible Leak

If you keep topping up coolant but never see a puddle, it could be leaking internally into the cylinders. White smoke from exhaust confirms.

⚠️ 9. Unpleasant Smells

  • Sweet smell: Coolant leak, possibly heater core or head gasket.
  • Sulphur or "rotten eggs": Catalytic converter failing.
  • Burning oil: Oil dripping onto hot exhaust, address before a fire.

What to Do If You Notice Any Sign

  • Stop driving safely and call us. We offer free diagnostic scanning for any warning light.
  • Keep a log of when symptoms occur (cold start vs. hot, city vs. highway).
  • Don't ignore it hoping it'll go away, it won't.
